The Blue and Gold Snapper: Lutjanus viridis
The Blue and Gold snapper, Lutjanus viridis, is known by many names, including the
Fourline Snapper and the Blue and Yellow Snapper. It is distinguishable from other snappers
and grunts in that it has four horizontal stripes along the side of its body. Most snappers
are carnivorous and live around reefs and on the continental slope. They are very important
economically as commercial and sport fishes. This family has 17 species in North America,
from the color-changing grey snapper to the schoolmaster. I photographed this school of blue
and yellow snapper in the rocky reefs of Palau, where they are quite common and not at all
shy. They will even come toward you as a school.
